Softball Team Gets Two Shutouts on Sunday

SAVANNAH, GA--The Bloomsburg University softball team swept two games on Sunday at the Smash Hit Tournament in Savannah, GA. The Huskies beat St. Francis of Indiana, 5-0, in game one of the day, then came back and shutout Illinois-Springfield, 4-0, in game two.

In the opener, Tara Reed (Williamsport/Williamsport) tossed a four-hit shutout and fanned 12 in leading Bloomsburg to a 5-0 win over St. Francis. Bloomsburg got all the runs it would need in the second inning when it put two on the board. Nikki Shiko (Kulpmont/Southern Columbia) singled and scored on a single by Natalie Zimmerman (State College/State College). Later in the inning, Reed doubled home a run for a 2-0 lead.

Bloomsburg added some insurance runs in the seventh inning with Zimmerman doubling home two of the three runs scored.

In the day's second game, Sheelin Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic) tossed a three-hit shutout, struck out nine and also had an RBI double. Bloomsburg scored twice in the second inning with Fisher driving in Kayleen Sidisky (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) with a double with Reed following with a sacrifice fly.

In the fifth, Reed reached on an error then moved to third on a single and scored on hit by Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) to make it 3-0. The Huskies got their final run of the day when Mandy Koch (Dauphin/Central Dauphin) walked, stole second and scored on a hit by Danielle Lazorka (Williamsport/Jersey Shore).

Bloomsburg, now 3-1, will face Chowan and West Liberty on Monday at the Smash Hit Tournament.
